Joint statement of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference
of Myanmar (CBCM) and The Myanmar Council of Churches (MCC)
=================================
                                                                                                            16 JANUARY 2013
We the Church leaders and people of God  gathered in  the CBCM  for the last three days  deliberated  on the theme  :
Emerging Opportunities and Challenges in   New Myanmar –
Church Response to  Nation Building and Reconciliation

After listening to various experts from Civil Society, INGOs, UN Agencies and the representatives of Buddhist and Indigenous communities   we  wish to release this statement to all stakeholders in Myanmar and elsewhere, recognizing a new situation is emerging in the country and the church wishes to play a proactive role as Christians and citizens of Myanmar.

We affirm

We are inspired by the message of Christ. God’s Kingdom values of peace, justice, fellowship and communion of the  human family.  Social mission is an integral part of our faith.    The God of History urges us to respond to the signs of times:

Welcome
·         Reform measures taken paving the way for greater space for civil society, freer media, greater respect to the rule of law.
·         Greater interaction with  the international community
·         Willingness to accommodate different views in the media and parliament
·         Establishing human rights commission and access to international human rights commission

Target

Youth, Women, Children, Indigenous communities and the poor of Myanmar for Justice, Peace and  total development

Commit
Ourselves to meet the following opportunities and Challenges that emerged in our deliberation

·         Dignity of our indigenous brothers and sisters, protecting and promoting their basic rights, their culture, their resource rights, bringing them for a celebration of culture periodically.
·          Peace and reconciliation; working for  peace in conflict areas, urging all the  parties to address the root cause of conflict and promote durable solution.
·         Special attention to Youth, Women and Children through targeted programs, establishment of secretariats, commissions, capacity building programs, ensuring specially women’s role and rights are enhanced and they play a proactive role in the church and its mission.
·         Promote dialogue with government, interchurch groups, civil Society groups other religious groups and active dialogue with the poor.
·         Contribute towards an educated nation through Education mission and a healthy nation through health mission. Church plays a major role in many parts of the world in developing the social sector, reaching out to the poor.
·         Have creative engagement with Buddhism the major religion of the country, in dialogue and service.

Urge

·         Increased democratization of the country through fair and equal treatment of all citizens without any discrimination of  Creed or Tribe or language.
·         Pursue Peaceful means of solution  for all conflicts, explore true federalism towards solving chronic  conflicts in the country
·         Invest urgently and robustly in human development- health and education, recognizing  development brings great prosperity, amity and peaceful co existence.

Assure

·         Total Co operation to all the stakeholders – government and others – in peace promotion and  understanding among communities.
·         Commitment in  social sectors –education and health – recognizing that  church has committed human resource and are willing to co operate

Wishing all Country men and women, Peace, Prosperity and Blessing of God Almighty
