Myanmar President orders an end to offensive operations in Lai Zar

According to a KIA spokesperson, the President of Myanmar gave a directive for troops to finish offensive operations on KIA headquarters in Lai Zar by 21 January.
KIA officials are aware of the presidential order that stipulates military forces have nearly  24 hours to confiscate the KIA headquarters. The directive calls for the confiscation of the Hka Yar Bum camp in Lagayan. Efforts to claim the camp started on January 19 at noon, but proved to be unsuccessful.
Sources suggest there is also a plan to confiscate KIA camp at border gate no. 6 in Pannwar area.
Efforts by the government to claim KIA operated territory was met with increased violence. On the morning of 20 January government troops surrounded areas from Seinlaung mountain to four places under KIA control:  Maga Hket, Yaw Yang, Lagat Bum, and Jan mai in Minejayan area. The escalation of attacks included firing by Burmese troops on KIA forces in the Hka Yar mountain.
Involved in this military operation were battalions from IB 251, 252, 253, 254, 255, 256, 257, 258, 259, and division 101 in Pakokku DIstrict. Two commanders from IB 252 and 258 were seriously injured during the conflict. Also resulting from the conflict, was the dissolution of IB 258,  which suffered the loss of several soldiers.
The Kachin, like Myanmar's other ethnic minorities, have long sought greater autonomy from the central government. They reached a peace agreement with the previous military regime in 1994 but a cease-fire agreement broke down in June 2011 after the Kachin refused to abandon a strategic base near a hydropower plant that is a joint venture with a Chinese company.
The conflict has forced about 100,000 Kachin from their homes since then, and many are in camps near the Kachin headquarters in Laiza near the Chinese border.
