Government military operations in Lai Zar impeded by the KIA

According to KIA spokesperson U Lah Nan, The Kachin
Independence Army (KIA) has collaborated with The All Burma Students' Democratic Front (ABSDF) to
attack government troops surrounding the town of Lai Zar in Kachin state. This
is in response to military attacks on the KIA which took place earlier in the
month.
“The fighting started in the morning and did not cease until
about 6 pm. The attacks were done by helicopter air strike,” Mr. U Lah Nan
commented.
Government troops Light Infantry Battalion (LIB) 383 and
388, set up an offensive attack in Lai Zar using 200 soldiers in an attempt to
weaken KIA strength in the area. Yet, KIA forces surrounded the perimeter of
Lai Zar, hindering the offensive forces; the KIA strategy thwarted the
government’s military operations by shooting and ultimately damaging
helicopters used in the air strike.
The envelopment of government troops by the KIA allowed for
opposition forces to defensively fire at the battalion. Sources suggest the
government troops might not be able to withdraw immediately and will request
additional soldiers for military support; troops injured in the conflict are
expected to be transported out of the area tomorrow.
Military analysts anticipate grave damage to government
forces, who are now in a precarious position. Surrounded by KIA forces, Burmese
armed forces are without sufficient military support, have extensive damage to
their battalions, and are with a weakened front. To lessen the impact of the
failed assault, government troops have receded and quelled attacks on the KIA.
Analysts contend, the KIA will take advantage of the military’s weakened
defense and will attack while government forces are compromised.
The recent attack is accompanied by similar violence in the
eastern region of Kachin state. For several weeks government forces have
attempted to reclaim the previously occupied
Pannwar Township.
Sources see no end to the escalating violence and attribute
the unsuccessful attempts of the military battalion to “very young” troops who
lack necessary experience in military combat.
